Fundashon Dier en Onderwijs Cariben

The beautiful flora and Fauna of Curacao is part of the reason Drs. Odette Doest wanted to become a veterinarian. As a small child she would try to save injured small birds, iguanas and other critters that would cross her path. So it is no wonder that once she became an avian vet she dedicated part of her time at rescuing native wildlife http://www.vetdoest.com

At first she would finance it out of her own pocket and through the practice until it reached the point where she was losing money so things had to change. She was not going to stop to helping injured animals, nor stop with her education sessions so therefore she founded with the help of two the foundation "Fundashon Dier en Onderwijs Cariben", so the foundation could officially collect funds for the treatment, housing and release of the animals as well as provide for the education of youngsters, adults and tourists around the island.

The foundation is involved in the following: medical care, rehabilitation, education and research

The foundation is involved in the following: medical care, rehabilitation, education and research

Educate as many people as possible both locally and internationally about the fragility of our ecosystem. This can be achieved by working together with schools, day care centers, companies and other nature organizations located internationally, locally and on the other dutch Caribbean islands. Education is done through visits to different locations or at the foundation location where most animals are housed once they are released from the hospital. The education animal encounters have a great impact on the vistors which helps to spread the conservation message even further.

FDOC also provide shelter for our injured fauna and treat them until they can be released back into the wild, making sure they get the right housing, food and medical care. Rehabilitation of an animal can take a few days up to a few months. But if an animal can be released safely they will be released.

The foundation also assists in: research projects that involve our local flora and fauna, aid in the mapping of sylvatic diseases; working together with research entities like CVI lelystad/ Wageningen research center, Utrecht university, Erasmus university, local health institutions and the veterinary services of the dutch caribbean islands.
